The Islamic month of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Hijri year, began in India on Friday, June 27, following the sighting of the crescent moon on June 26.

Observed as one of the four sacred months in Islam, Muharram carries deep spiritual and historical weight, particularly for the Shia Muslim community.

This year, Ashura—the 10th day of Muharram and its most significant date—will fall on Sunday, July 6, as per the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee’s declaration.

A sacred month of mourning and reflection

Muharram is considered the second most revered month after Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, introspection, and remembrance.

For Shia Muslims, the month is primarily associated with mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

To commemorate his sacrifice, Shia communities across the world participate in majlis (religious gatherings), mourning processions, and poetic recitations recounting the tragedy of Karbala.

Some devotees engage in symbolic acts of self-flagellation as an expression of grief and solidarity with Imam Hussain’s suffering.

Sunni Muslims also mark Ashura, though in a different manner. Many observe the day by fasting and offering additional prayers, in keeping with traditions attributed to Prophet Muhammad.

Beyond its rituals, Muharram serves as a time for Muslims to renew their faith, seek forgiveness, and reflect on the values of justice, sacrifice, and steadfastness.

J&K steps up Muharram preparations

In Jammu and Kashmir, where Muharram processions draw significant participation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the arrangements in a high-level meeting held last week.

“We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts, and there should be no shortcomings from our side,” he said, directing officials to ensure all necessary support for peaceful and orderly observances.

Security, traffic management, medical services, and public coordination are expected to be in focus as the region prepares for Ashura next week.
