Why has govt banned these OTT platforms?
The OTT platforms were reportedly found in violation of provisions under the IT Act for hosting explicit and obscene content. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, establish a strict regulatory framework aimed at ensuring digital publishers and intermediaries adhere to content standards and legal compliance, ANI reported. This is not the first time the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has intervened. In July 2025, the Ministry undertook a similar crackdown, blocking 25 OTT platforms. Authorities flagged platforms such as Big Shots App and NeonX VIP as repeat violators after their content was deemed obscene or inappropriate.
Those platforms included ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, ShowHit, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix and Triflicks. The MIB concluded that several shows breached legal provisions, including Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, which prohibit the publication and transmission of sexually explicit material in electronic form.

40 outlets shut down by government
With the latest action, a total of 40 outlets — 26 websites and 14 apps — have been shut down for violating India’s IT laws. According to officials, much of the flagged material consisted of graphic sexual imagery with little narrative substance, social message, or contextual justification. Some content allegedly portrayed inappropriate sexual situations involving familial relationships, raising further concerns over legality and decency.ALSO READ: Dog Lick sepsis treatment: Check signs, unusual symptoms, when should you see a doctor, how to prevent infection and more
Sources also indicated that some services previously blocked in March 2024 attempted to circumvent restrictions by relaunching under new domains. The action was taken after consultations between government departments, industry bodies, and women’s rights representatives. Even the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC), the industry’s self-regulatory body headed by a former Supreme Court judge, reportedly described certain content as “distasteful” and “bizarre,” noting that explicit scenes appeared gratuitous rather than integral to storytelling.
