Modi to rename Adampur Airport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday rename the Adampur airport as Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, marking a major symbolic outreach to the Ravidassia community. The move coincides with the 649th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, a revered Bhakti movement saint, especially respected among Dalits across North India. Alongside the renaming, Modi will also visit Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar, the spiritual headquarters of the Ravidassia community.

Why Adampur Airport Matters

Adampur is not just a civilian airport but also a strategically important Air Force station, where India’s S-400 air defence system is deployed.

Renaming the airport at this location adds both symbolic and political weight to the announcement.

Long-Pending Demand Meets a Key Anniversary

The demand to rename Adampur airport after Guru Ravidas has existed for years. By timing the decision with the saint’s birth anniversary and personally associating himself with the event, Modi has sent a strong message of cultural recognition and inclusion.

The choice underlines BJP’s strategy of blending religious reverence with political outreach.

Visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan

During his Punjab visit, Modi will attend a public programme at Dera Sachkhand Ballan and interact with Niranjan Dass, the dera’s spiritual head. Niranjan Dass was awarded the Padma Shri on the eve of Republic Day this year.

The dera holds immense influence among the Ravidassia community, particularly in the Doaba region.

Doaba’s Dalit Demographics and Political Importance

Punjab has the highest Dalit population share in India, with nearly 32% of its population belonging to Scheduled Castes. In the Doaba region, this figure rises to around 42%, making it a crucial political battleground.

The Ravidassia community alone accounts for 10–12% of Punjab’s population, positioning it as one of the most influential Dalit subgroups in the state.

Guru Ravidas and Modi’s Cultural Outreach

Modi has repeatedly highlighted Guru Ravidas in his cultural and political narrative. In recent years, he has:

  • Launched development projects at Ravidas’s birthplace in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency
  • Initiated plans for a memorial in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh
  • Visited Ravidas temples to pay tributes
These efforts align with BJP’s broader push for Hindu social cohesion and outreach to disadvantaged castes.

Punjab Polls Ahead, Political Stakes High

With Punjab Assembly elections due in the first quarter of next year, the timing of this outreach is significant. The political field is crowded, with AAP, Congress, BJP, and other parties vying for dominance.

Since AAP’s rise and the end of the BJP–Akali alliance, Dalit votes have become even more decisive in shaping Punjab’s political future.

A Strategic Move Beyond Symbolism

Renaming Adampur airport and visiting Dera Sachkhand Ballan goes beyond symbolism. It reflects BJP’s sustained attempt to build deeper connections with influential Dalit communities, a strategy that has contributed to the party’s expansion beyond its traditional base.

As Punjab heads into election season, every cultural and political signal matters, and this one is loud and clear.
