Despite all these concerns, Bill Gates has reaffirmed his belief in the transformative potential of AI

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that some AI companies with high valuations will lose out in the “hyper competitive” AI industry. During an interview with CNBC, the tech billionaire said that not all companies with high valuations “will be winners” in the “hyper competitive” AI market, cautioning the investors should prepare themselves for corrections of fear as the AI bubble is intensifying day by day. Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Finance Week, the philanthropist added that it was “a deeply profound technology that will reshape the world". Bill Gates also highlighted that the hyper-competitive nature of AI means that only a fraction of companies will emerge as long-term winners, adding that “a reasonable percentage of those companies won’t be worth that much.”

'AI most important thing'

"AI is the most important thing going on. “Does it mean all of these companies with high valuations will be winners? No, it’s going to be hyper competitive,” Gates said.

He added: “AI is only a bubble in the sense that not all of these valuations will end up going up. Some of them will go down… A reasonable percentage of those companies won’t be worth that much.”

Many AI-focused companies are trading at valuations far above historical norms. Palantir and Tesla, for instance, have price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios—measuring a stock’s price relative to its earnings per share—well above 200, compared with an S&P 500 average of around 25. Bill Gates said that “a reasonable percentage of those companies won’t be worth that much.”

'AI a transformative force', says Bill Gates

Despite all these concerns, Gates has reaffirmed his belief in the transformative potential of AI. He also described it as “a deeply profound technology that will reshape the world,” with applications across health, education, and agriculture.

Bill Gates said AI would fundamentally change lives for the better. “Is this profound and real and is going to provide all of these benefits, including the health, education and agriculture that we’re working on? Absolutely, nobody should have any doubt about that.”
