Meet Priya Sachdev Kapur: Daughter of an automobile dealer who failed in Bollywood but is now fighting a ₹30,000-crore battle

Priya Sachdev Kapur — entrepreneur, former model, and wife of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur — has found herself at the center of a major corporate succession conflict. The battle erupted after Sunjay Kapur, chairman of the ₹30,000-crore Sona Group, passed away from a heart attack on June 12, 2025, while playing polo in England. His sudden demise has not only left a leadership void but also triggered a bitter rift within the Kapur family.

Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has raised serious allegations of coercion and misrepresentation regarding the group’s management and control. In a letter to the Sona Comstar board ahead of its annual general meeting, she claimed she had been forced to sign key documents “behind locked doors,” denied access to her own accounts, and warned of “gross illegalities” within the group. The allegations indirectly put Priya Sachdev Kapur under scrutiny, hinting at a protracted legal and corporate struggle.

Education and Early Career

Born into a family with deep roots in the automobile industry, Priya pursued academics abroad, earning a degree in mathematics and business management from University College London. She started her professional journey in London with Credit Suisse First Boston, where she worked in mergers and acquisitions before returning to India.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

Back in India, Priya took on multiple leadership roles and co-founded Rock N Shop, one of the country’s pioneering luxury e-commerce platforms. She also serves as director at Aureus Investment and is a non-executive director at Sona Comstar, a position that now gains additional significance amid the ongoing dispute.

Bollywood Foray and Personal Life

In the early 2000s, Priya briefly tried her hand at acting and modeling. She appeared in television commercials, including one alongside Kareena Kapoor, and played a supporting role in the 2005 film Neal ’n’ Nikki.

Her personal life has also been in the public eye. Her first marriage to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal ended in divorce after a custody battle. In 2017, she married Sunjay Kapur, who was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor.
