Meet Jayshree Ullal: Top-ranked Indian-origin woman on America’s richest self-made list With $6.8 billion net worth
Jayshree Ullal has emerged as one of the most influential figures in global technology and has made strides in internet-networking infrastructure. Today, she stands at No. 7 on the Forbes 2026 America's Richest Self-Made Women list, with an estimated net worth of $6.8 billion, making her the highest-ranked Indian-origin woman on the list, reports Forbes.

She did not achieve success overnight. It was her timing, technical depth and a rare ability to see where the internet and later cloud computing and artificial intelligence were heading.

From New Delhi upbringing to London boom

Born in London to Indian parents and raised in New Delhi, Jayshree Ullal developed an early interest in how systems work and how technology connects people and machines. That curiosity eventually shaped her academic path and career choices.

She moved to the United States for higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University and later a master’s in engineering management from Santa Clara University.

Unlike many corporate leaders who come from finance or pure management backgrounds, Ullal’s foundation was deeply technical. That grounding would later become a major advantage in a fast-changing tech landscape.

Early Career: Building Experience at Silicon Valley Giants

Before becoming a billionaire executive, Ullal spent years working across major semiconductor and networking companies. She held roles at semiconductor firms such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Fairchild Semiconductor, gaining hands-on exposure to hardware and chip ecosystems. She later joined Cisco Systems, where she spent around 15 years in senior leadership positions.

At Cisco, she worked during a defining phase of the internet’s expansion, when global connectivity was scaling rapidly. Her role placed her at the centre of enterprise networking decisions, helping shape how businesses connected to the digital world.

The Big Move: Joining a Startup with No Revenue

In 2008, Ullal made a bold career shift by joining a small startup called Arista Networks as president and CEO. At the time, the company had fewer than 50 employees and no revenue. On paper, it was a high-risk move. Cisco dominated the networking industry, and smaller challengers often struggled to survive.

But Ullal saw something others didn’t. Cloud computing was about to reshape everything. Data centers were becoming the backbone of the internet, and they needed faster, more efficient networking systems. This insight became the foundation of Arista’s growth strategy.

Building Arista into a Cloud Powerhouse

Under her leadership, Arista Networks focused on high-performance networking solutions designed specifically for large-scale cloud environments. Instead of competing broadly, the company doubled down on a niche that would later become central to global tech infrastructure: cloud data centres and hyperscale computing.

The company went public in 2014, a milestone IPO that firmly established Arista as a serious competitor in the global networking space. Today, Arista is deeply embedded in the infrastructure powering cloud platforms and AI workloads worldwide.

The company reported around $9 billion in revenue in 2024, driven largely by demand from cloud and AI infrastructure expansion.

A Billionaire Built on Leadership, Not Founding

She reportedly owns around 3% of the company, a stake worth billions of dollars. A portion of these holdings has also been allocated to her family, including her children and relatives.

Beyond her CEO role, Ullal also serves on the board of directors of Snowflake, one of the leading cloud data platforms globally.

She is widely recognised in Silicon Valley as a leader who bridges deep technical understanding with executive decision-making. Over the years, she has consistently appeared in rankings of influential women in business and technology.
