While he may not command the same spotlight as mainstream stars, Oberoi is widely regarded within the industry for his commitment and craft. In Dhurandhar, he proves how a well-executed supporting role can elevate the overall impact of a film. His character draws inspiration from the real-life figure Maulana Muhammad Khan Shirani.

Who was Maulana Muhammad Khan Shirani?

Maulana Muhammad Khan Shirani was a Pakistani Islamic scholar and political figure often associated with hardline views. He was linked to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and played a notable role in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. After being expelled from the party in 2020, he went on to form his own faction, JUI-Shirani. Even in his later years, he remained in the spotlight, including making headlines for his second marriage at the age of 92.

Reports suggest that the character of Shirani Ahmed Baloch also takes inspiration from Akbar Bugti, a key figure in Balochistan’s political history. Once part of the establishment, Bugti later became a prominent voice for the region’s autonomy and rights. He was killed during Pervez Musharraf’s tenure, turning him into a symbol of resistance. While the film takes creative liberties, it grounds its narrative in real-world influences.
