Mauni Amavasya of the Magha month will be observed on Sunday this year, a timing that devotees believe makes the day more powerful. Holy bathing, charity, prayer, meditation and inner cleansing are considered especially rewarding. The day is also marked by the rare overlap of Shiva Vas Yoga, Sarvarth Siddhi Yoga and Harshana Yoga, making it stand out on the religious calendar.

Devotees take holy dips in rivers and focus on charity and worship. Staying silent while performing rituals is believed to bring better spiritual outcomes, which is how the day gets its name.

Mauni Amavasya holy practices

Mauni Amavasya is widely linked with acts of giving. Bathing in sacred rivers like the Ganga and Narmada is believed to multiply spiritual merit. Donating food, clothes, blankets, oil, milk, grains or money, according to one’s capacity, is considered beneficial. Feeding animals and birds is also associated with ancestral blessings.

Devotees place special importance on bathing during Brahma Muhurat on Mauni Amavasya. If a river bath is not possible, adding holy water to regular bath water is considered an alternative. Observers often maintain silence before the bath, offer water to the Sun God and spend the day in prayer, chanting, meditation and charity. Fasting on this day is also believed to bring added spiritual merit.

Mauni Amavasya Mantra

Mauni Amavasya is also linked with prayers for ancestors. After offering water to the Sun God, devotees are advised to chant the following mantra 108 times for relief from ancestral afflictions and for peace and prosperity in life:

“ॐ आद्य-भूताय विद्महे सर्व-सेव्याय धीमहि, शिव-शक्ति-स्वरूपेण पितृ-देव प्रचोदयात्”
