Exams cancelled after massive fire breaks out at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College library

A fire broke out at the library of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce (SGGSCC) in Delhi on Thursday morning, causing damage to hundreds of books and leading to the cancellation of semester exams.

According to officials from the college, which is part of Delhi University, the fire started due to a short circuit in the library’s server room. The fire spread quickly and affected the first three floors of the four-storey building.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call about the fire at 8:55 am and rushed eleven fire engines to the spot. The flames were brought under control by 9:40 am. Luckily, no one was injured.

Exams cancelled

The college had to cancel the semester examinations scheduled for the morning session on 15 May 2025. A college official said, “The alternative date and schedule for the cancelled exam will be shared soon.”

The fire destroyed a large section of the library that housed old and archival books. An official said, “Hundreds of books have been burnt. The section with the oldest collections is the worst affected. The entire area is still filled with smoke, so a proper assessment will take some time.”

Investigation ongoing

Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage. The college has assured students that further updates regarding exams and library recovery will be shared soon.
