Masik Durga Ashtami July 2022: Significance, rituals and more

Every month, Masik Durga Ashtami Vrat is observed on eighth day (or Ashtami Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha.. This month, the auspicious occasion will fall on 7 July.

On this day, people observe a fast in honour of Goddess Durga. It is believed that praying to the goddess on Masik Durga Ashtami brings peace and fortune.

As per the Hindu Vedic Calendar , Masik Durga Asthami (monthly Durgashtmi) is observed on Ashtami tithi (eighth date) of the Shukla Paksha. This month, the Masik Durga Asthami is falling on July 7.


On this day, as per Hindu rituals, people observe a fast in honour of Goddess Durga. It is believed that praying to the Goddess Durga, on this day, brings peace and fortune. It is also believed that praying to the goddess also helps in resolving problems in people's lives.

‘Shubh Muharat’
According to the Panchang, the 'muhurta' (auspicious timing) for this auspicious occasion will start from 7:48 pm on July 6 and will continue till 7:28 pm on July 7. People can observe the fast from from sunrise of July 7. The Abhijit Muhurta will span from 11:58 am to 12:54 pm on Thursday.

‘Puja Vidhi’
As per Hindu beliefs, worshippers need to wake up in the Brahma Muhurta after which they need to take bath and wear clean clothes. Before beginning the prayers, devotees need to purifying the place of worship with Gangajal (Holy Ganga water). After this, Goddess Durga’s idol needed to placed over a red cloth and Gangajal must be sprinkled over it. Now light a diya in front of the idol. The Goddess needs to be offered items like flowers, mala, akshat, sindoor, fruits and sweets and incense sticks must be lit. Now, Durga Chalisa and mantras must be recited and Durga Arti must be performed. The devotees also need to prepare Satvik food at home and offering it to the goddess.
