Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is constructing dedicated railway sidings at its Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat plants to carry automobiles across locations.

Last year, the firm moved over 3.2 lakh autos through rail wagons, the most in a calendar year since 2013, when the company obtained the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence.

Maruti Suzuki became the first automotive manufacturer in India to get an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence in 2013. This licence enables the Company to manufacture and operate high-speed, high-capacity auto-wagon rakes on the Indian Railways network.Since then, the Company has worked tirelessly to increase the proportion of deliveries made by trains.


In terms of volume, the Company has experienced a five-fold growth in railway dispatches during the previous decade.

The railways' proportion in carrying Maruti Suzuki vehicles is increasing, and it reached 17.1 percent last calendar year, up from 13.9 percent/2.2 lakh units in 2021.

Maruti Suzuki's AFTO licence permits it to manufacture and operate high-speed, high-capacity auto wagon rakes on the Indian Railways network.

Maruti Suzuki transports autos around the country using 40 specially constructed railway rakes. Each rake can transport more than 300 automobiles.

Currently, the company uses loading terminals in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, as well as 18 destination terminals in Bangalore, Nagpur, Mumbai, Guwahati, Mundra Port, Indore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi-NCR, Siliguri, Coimbatore, Pune, Agartala, Silchar, Ranchi, and Ludhiana

There are several concrete advantages to transporting completed autos over railways. It is a non-polluting, environmentally beneficial means of transportation. It minimises highway congestion and makes more room accessible for other motorists.

In fiscal year 2022, the firm mitigated about 1800 MT of CO2 emissions by using the rail network to dispatch trucks. Furthermore, the automaker was able to save over 50 million litres of gasoline last year, contributing to our country's energy security.
