Priscilla Chan's parents fled Vietnam by boat

As per a TOI report, Chan was born in Massachusetts to Chinese-Vietnamese refugee parents. Her family's journey to the US began during the Vietnam War, when her grandparents made the difficult decision to send their children away by boat.

Chan has spoken about how her parents were teenagers when they left Vietnam. According to her accounts, the family faced the possibility that they might never be reunited. It reportedly took around a decade before the family was together again.

Her parents eventually arrived in the US as refugees with little money and limited English. They worked to establish a new life and create better opportunities for their children.

Chan has recalled that she began helping her family navigate language barriers when she was just six years old, translating for them. As a teenager, she also worked at the front desk of the restaurant her parents eventually managed.

Her childhood experiences of financial uncertainty and feeling different from those around her later influenced the way she spoke about education, opportunity and access.

She became the first in her family to attend college

Chan went on to become the first person in her family to attend college, enrolling at Harvard University.

She studied biology and graduated in 2007. During her time at Harvard, she received financial aid and became involved with the Phillips Brooks House Association, a public service programme.

Chan has credited the organisation with providing support during her university years and helping strengthen her interest in service.

After Harvard, she briefly worked as an elementary school science teacher before moving into medicine.

From teacher to paediatrician

Chan attended the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she earned her medical degree and trained as a paediatrician.

She subsequently worked at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital for eight years, caring for children and their families.

Her experience with patients suffering from rare diseases became particularly influential. Chan has described meeting families who had spent months or even years searching for an explanation for their children's illnesses.

In some cases, doctors simply did not have the answers.

Those experiences exposed Chan to the limits of existing medical knowledge and strengthened her belief that advances in basic science could eventually lead to better diagnoses, treatments and cures.

In 2015, Chan and Zuckerberg established the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a philanthropic organisation initially focused on advancing human potential and promoting equality.

In their founding letter, the couple said they planned to devote 99% of their Facebook shares during their lifetimes to philanthropic purposes connected to those goals.

CZI went on to develop programmes spanning science, education, and justice and opportunity, with Chan playing a central role as co-founder and co-CEO.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative pledged billions for science

Scientific research became one of CZI's major areas of philanthropy.

In 2016, Chan and Zuckerberg announced plans to commit $3 billion over 10 years towards efforts to help scientists prevent, cure or manage diseases.

One of the initiative's early major commitments was $600 million for the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, designed to bring scientists and engineers together to develop new tools and technologies for biomedical research.

The $3 billion figure represented the couple's broader philanthropic commitment through CZI rather than a personal donation from Chan alone.
