A seemingly innocent question at the National Rifle Association of India’s 75th anniversary event has triggered a heated debate on social media, with many accusing the interviewer of undermining Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker’s achievements. The 24-year-old shooter, who won two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, was asked for her opinion on 15-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the event in the capital.

While Bhaker responded with composure and maturity, the very framing of the question — shifting the spotlight from her accomplishments to a young cricketer — did not sit well with a section of netizens. In her reply, Bhaker chose to focus on the bigger picture rather than the comparison. “If the mentorship is good and the environment around him is positive, then age is just a number. There is no age for talent,” she said.

She further added, “Great things can happen at six or at 60. If he is guided well, I am sure Vaibhav will become the next big star.”Despite her gracious response, the interaction drew sharp criticism online. Many argued that Bhaker, a proven international champion in shooting, deserved to be celebrated for her own journey instead of being asked to comment on a rising star from another sport.

Former Kolkata Knight Riders team director Joy Bhattacharjya was among the most vocal critics. He posted on X: “She is an Olympic medallist. Asking her about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi feels unfair to her achievements and her sport. Cricket already dominates the headlines. Next time, try asking Vaibhav what he thinks of Manu Bhaker.”

Several other users echoed the sentiment, pointing out how athletes from non-cricket sports are frequently pulled into cricket-related narratives, especially when a young talent is making waves. The episode has reignited discussions about the disproportionate media attention cricket receives in India compared to other Olympic disciplines.

Meanwhile, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to grab headlines with his fearless performances in the IPL. At just 15 years of age, he has already become the youngest player to reach 1,000 T20 runs and has delivered several explosive innings this season.

Bhaker, on the other hand, remains one of India’s brightest shooting talents. Her back-to-back bronze medals in Paris last year marked a significant milestone for Indian shooting and inspired many young athletes in the country.
