A 23-year-old domestic worker from Manipur, employed in Bengaluru, has accused her employer’s spouse of wrongful confinement, physical assault and starvation at a residence located on the campus of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in Bilekahalli on Bannerghatta Road, reported TOI.

In a complaint lodged at the Mico Layout police station, the woman, identified as C Nianghaunuam, said she had been working at the residence of Amar and his wife Anshu since 2019. Her duties mainly involved caring for the couple’s children while living in the house.

According to the complaint, the alleged abuse began in 2021. Nianghaunuam alleged that Anshu frequently assaulted her, monitored her phone conversations and occasionally confiscated her mobile phone. “Even when I was ill, she would beat me. I was assaulted several times and cannot remember all the incidents. The last assault took place on April 15, after which I was locked inside the house,” she alleged.

She also claimed that she was denied food from the morning of May 4 and eventually sought help from neighbours. “The neighbours provided me with bananas and parathas, besides helping me with a mobile phone through which I contacted my relatives and members of Kuki Students' Organisation Bengaluru (KSOB) for assistance,” the FIR stated.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 127(4) (wrongful confinement) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Following the allegations, IIM Bangalore said in a statement that the institute had provided necessary assistance and support to the woman, despite her not being employed through institute contractors. “We remain committed to following the law, due process and doing the right thing,” the institute said.
