Man working away from home uses Claude and old laptop to stay connected with mother through 24x7 video call

A man working away from home has found a simple way to remain connected with his mother without needing to call her repeatedly. He set up an old laptop at his home with a video call that remains active throughout the day, allowing the two to see each other while continuing with their own routines.

The heartwarming setup was shared on X by user Harsh Savergaonkar. He explained that he used an old Linux laptop and a large screen placed on the dining table to create the always-on video connection.

“Leaving mom for work was the hardest this time. So I set up an old Linux laptop with a big screen on our dining table that stays on a video call 24x7,” he wrote.

AI helps keep the video call running

Savergaonkar said he used Claude to create scripts that automatically reconnect the video call if the laptop or browser crashes. The setup is also designed to reconnect when the Wi-Fi connection drops.

“If it gets switched off, she just presses the power button and I’m back,” he added.

The arrangement means his mother does not have to navigate complicated settings or make a call whenever she wants to see him. A simple press of the power button is enough to restore the connection.

‘Every now and then she looks up and I’m there’

Savergaonkar said he was working and eating somewhere over Iceland while his mother stayed at home and continued with her own work.

“ We’re not even talking, but every now and then she looks up and I’m there, and I look up and she’s there,” he wrote.

The setup allows them to share the same virtual space without requiring them to constantly interact. They can continue working independently while still having the comfort of knowing the other person is nearby on screen.

A touching late-night moment

“Thank you, technology,” he concluded.
