In a recent conversation with content creator Viraj Ala, the IIT Kanpur and Harvard Business School graduate reflected on his entrepreneurial journey, the challenges of building Goldcast and the lessons that stayed with him after selling the company in a reported $300 million (around Rs 2,700 crore) deal.
The AI-powered B2B video platform was acquired by Blackstone-backed Cvent in December 2025, marking one of the biggest exits in the B2B marketing technology space.
'I just sold my company'
When Ala asked about his educational background, Soni said he completed his undergraduate studies at IIT Kanpur before pursuing an MBA at Harvard Business School. Asked what he does today, Soni smiled and said, "I just sold my company."When Ala referred to Goldcast's reported $300 million acquisition, Soni responded, "Yeah, it was a great deal."
Palash Soni says 'naivety' helped him become a founder
Soni believes one of the most valuable qualities for entrepreneurs is something that rarely features in classrooms."It's actually naivety... I used to play Counter-Strike in college, and I was a noob. I would run out in the open field and get headshotted," he said.
Using the gaming anecdote, Soni explained that beginners are often willing to try things without overthinking failure. That willingness to learn through experience, he said, proved invaluable while building Goldcast.
Why limited resources became Goldcast's biggest advantage
Unlike many well-funded startups, Goldcast did not have unlimited resources in its early days. According to Soni, that forced the team to remain disciplined and concentrate only on what truly mattered.Rather than seeing financial constraints as a disadvantage, Soni believes they ultimately helped the company make smarter decisions.
'We believed in something no one else saw'
Raising capital was another hurdle that tested the founders' conviction.Soni admitted that attracting investors was never straightforward because many struggled to understand Goldcast's long-term vision.
"Just the willingness to take a bet on ourselves. We saw something in the market that no one else saw. I always had a very hard time raising money for Goldcast, considering the kind of outcome we had. We believed in something that was very hard for outsiders to see," he said.
Asked whether that unwavering belief was ultimately a strength or a weakness, Soni replied: "It was a strength. The focus was the strength."
Palash Soni on layoffs 'I should have done it sooner'
The discussion also touched on one of the toughest realities of leading a startup, layoffs.Reflecting on what the experience taught him, Soni gave a blunt answer.
"I should have done it sooner." Despite the difficult decisions that come with running a growing business, he said he always tried to remain approachable.
"I believe in being very approachable. Even till the end, when we had 150 people, I think I'd spoken with everyone one-on-one multiple times," he said.
The one trait every top performer shares
When asked what separates exceptional professionals from everyone else, Soni pointed to one quality above all.His answer was simple: "Intellectual honesty."
According to Soni, being honest with oneself, accepting mistakes and making decisions based on facts rather than ego are qualities that help individuals and businesses grow over time.
Who is Palash Soni?
According to his LinkedIn profile, Palash Soni co-founded Goldcast in 2020 with Kishore Kothandaraman and Aashish Srinivas while studying at Harvard Business School. The AI-powered B2B video platform raised more than $40 million in funding, served hundreds of enterprise customers and was acquired by Cvent in December 2025.
Before launching Goldcast, Soni spent nearly four years at InMobi in Bengaluru, working in product management and strategy. He had earlier founded customer relationship management startup Aqita and also worked at ITC Limited.
