The visuals show Oberoi stepping out of the gurdwara and moving towards his Mahindra Thar parked nearby. As he unlocked the SUV and sat inside, a hooded youth approached the vehicle casually and opened fire from close range. The attacker appeared to wait until Oberoi had settled in the car, effectively eliminating any chance of escape.
After firing multiple shots, the assailant fled the spot, running towards a scooter that emerged from a nearby lane before speeding away. The entire attack unfolded in less than 10 seconds.
Investigators said several bullets were fired at the victim before the assailants escaped. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being scrutinised, and a manhunt has been launched to identify the shooters and ascertain the motive behind the killing.
Oberoi’s wife, Simarjot Kaur, had contested last year’s municipal corporation elections on an AAP ticket. Oberoi was considered close to Rajwinder Thiara, the party’s in-charge for the Jalandhar Cantt constituency.
A financier by profession, Oberoi was also involved in the property business and resided in the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar area of Jalandhar.
Police said further details would be shared as the investigation progresses.
