Man cheated of Rs 25 lakh in job fraud via Telegram

A Gurugram resident recently fell victim to cyber fraud, losing Rs 25 lakh after being lured into a job scam through messaging platform Telegram.

The incident led to the 46-year-old victim filing a First Information Report (FIR) at the Cyber Crime police station on Monday. According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Sector 76, received a job offer on Telegram on March 3. The fraudster promised lucrative returns and instructed the victim to deposit Rs 10,000 to receive daily tasks, resulting in an initial payment of Rs 18,000. The victim is already employed at a private company.


Under the pretext of employment, the fraudster posed as the representative of a travel company, gaining the victim's trust. The situation took a turn when the fraudster demanded another Rs 50,000, threatening to block the victim's account if the demand went unmet.

The victim of this scam had, by this point, already invested Rs 25 lakh with the promise of employment given to him, he quickly came to realise he was being scammed when he was unable to withdraw any funds.

Local cops have registered an FIR under sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Gurgaon police spokesperson Subhash Boken confirmed that specialized teams have been mobilized to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the scam.
