Man carrying Rs 25 lakh robbed at gunpoint on Delhi-Meerut Expressway; vehicles kept moving as armed gang stopped his Thar and fled with cash.

A Meerut businessman carrying Rs 25 lakh in his Thar was robbed by armed men on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway on Friday evening. The gang allegedly stopped his vehicle, threatened him with a pistol and escaped with the cash while traffic continued to pass around them.

The businessman, identified as Gillaman, was travelling from Meerut towards Jafrabad in Delhi with his cousin Samad and relative Saleem. He had left Meerut around 5 pm and reached the Dasna stretch of the expressway about two hours later.

According to The Times of India, Gillaman said a Scorpio had overtaken his Thar several times before its driver suddenly signalled him to stop. He then pulled over by the expressway.

Police said five men got out of the Scorpio and began searching the Thar. Another car stopped behind the vehicle.

The men allegedly told Gillaman that they were looking for their sister, whom they claimed had been kidnapped for marriage. When Gillaman told them that they had stopped the wrong vehicle, the situation turned violent.

Speaking to TOI, Gillaman said the men pulled out a pistol and pointed it at his head. When his cousin tried to intervene, the attackers allegedly hit him with the butt of a revolver.

The attackers took the cash and left the Thar. Gillaman told TOI that the entire assault lasted around 10 minutes and that two men kept guns pointed at his head during the robbery.

The unusual part of the incident was that it unfolded on the busy expressway, with other vehicles continuing to move around the Thar while the armed men carried out the robbery.

Police have formed five teams to investigate the case. Officers have detained three suspects and seized the Scorpio and Swift seen in the CCTV footage.

Investigators are now questioning the suspects to identify the other members of the gang and determine how the group knew that Gillaman was carrying Rs 25 lakh.

The incident comes months after another cash robbery on nearby NH-9. On May 6, armed men allegedly hijacked a cash van near an HP petrol pump and escaped with nearly Rs 27 lakh.
