The operation was part of a larger crackdown on a suspected luxury vehicle scam. Earlier, the ED had raided 17 other locations connected to popular Malayalam actors, including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Dulquer Salmaan, and Amith Chakalakkal, as well as vehicle dealers, workshops, and business establishments in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kottayam, and Coimbatore.
According to officials, preliminary findings suggest that a Coimbatore-based network allegedly used fake documents, purportedly showing links to the Indian Army, the US Embassy, and the Ministry of External Affairs, to register luxury cars fraudulently in states like Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. These vehicles were then sold at undervalued prices to wealthy buyers, including some from the film industry.
The investigation reportedly covers a wider web of alleged tax evasion, smuggling of imported vehicles, and foreign exchange violations. The ED’s Kochi Zonal Office coordinated the raids across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, including Mammootty’s Chennai premises.
