Mahavir Jayanti, one of the most important festivals for the Jain community, will be celebrated on April 10 this year. As per Drik Panchang, the festival falls on the Trayodashi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. This year, the Trayodashi Tithi begins at 10:55 PM on April 9 and concludes at 1:00 AM on April 11. The day commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and final Tirthankara of Jainism.

Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth of Lord Mahavir, who was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama, located in present-day Bihar. A member of the Ikshvaku dynasty, he was raised in a royal family. According to Jain tradition, his birth was accompanied by divine signs foretelling his spiritual significance.

At the age of 30, Lord Mahavir renounced his royal life in search of spiritual enlightenment. Following 12 years of intense meditation, he attained Kevala Jnana, or absolute knowledge. He then dedicated the rest of his life to spreading the core tenets of Jainism—Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).
