Mahavir Jayanti 2023: Check date, history, significance and how to celebrate
This day celebrates the birth anniversary of revered Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavira.

Lord Mahavir was born on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha during the month of Chaitra. Mahavir Jayanti serves as a celebration of the life and teachings of this eminent spiritual teacher, who propagated the principles of dharma within the Jain faith. The upcoming celebration of Mahavir Jayanti begins on April 4, 2023.
He was born in Kundalagrama, Bihar in 599 BC (as per Swetambars) or 615 BC (as per Digambar Jains) to King Sidhartha and Queen Trisala. Despite being surrounded by luxury and comfort, he was never attracted to worldly pleasures. He left his kingdom, family and duties at the age of 30 to search for the meaning of his existence. He spent 12 years in intense penance in the forest to attain inner peace and tranquility.
Mahavir Jayanti: How to celebrate?
The day begins with the observance of certain rituals, including waking up early in the morning and taking a purifying bath. This is followed by the installation of an idol of Lord Mahavira, one of the most respected and significant saints in Jainism. The idol is adorned with flowers and an abhishekam, a ritualistic bathing ceremony, is performed by the devotees as a mark of respect and veneration.
As a gesture of devotion, the faithful offer sweets and fruits to Lord Mahavira. However, the festival also holds a greater significance as a day of giving and charity. On this auspicious day, believers engage in acts of kindness and compassion, such as feeding the poor and needy and distributing clothes to those who require them.
