How to preform puja and observe fast on Maha Shivratri

Mahashivratri is marked by various religious rituals. Devotees observe a day-long fast and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga is decorated with flowers and bael leaves, and offerings such as bhaang, fruits, honey, ghee, sweets, and milk are made.

Early in the morning, devotees take a ritual bath before visiting temples. The night is dedicated to worship, with many spending time at temples lighting lamps and participating in prayers. In some places, processions featuring Lord Shiva and Parvati are carried out in a palanquin.
