Mahashivratri is round the corner, here are some do’s and don'ts for the devotees observing fast.

This festival is observed in remembrance of the union of Lord Shiva and Parvati. While others believe that Lord Shiva performed Tandava Nritya on this day. Mahashivratri is celebrated across nations with enthusiasm. The bhakts visit temples, perform pujas and pour milk, sandalwood paste, sugar, ghee and other items on Shivling. Bhakts also keep fast for the whole day.
Here are some do’s and don’ts during the hour of fasting:
Mahashivratri fasting Do’s
1. On the day of the fast, wake up early in the morning during sunrise or Brahma Muhurta.
2. One must take bath early in the morning and stay clean throughout and it is advised to wear white clothes on the day of the fast.
3. Devotees observing fast are advised to keep chanting ‘Om Namah Shivay’ all day.
4. The Sankalp should be taken one day prior to vrat and while performing puja.
5. People observing fast must take a second bath in the evening as the Shiv puja is done later in the day.
6. Devotees suffering from any health conditions are advised to consult a doctor before taking fast.
7. To avail maximum benefit of vrat, one must break fast between sunrise and before Chaturdashi Tithi ends.
Mahashivratri fasting Don’ts
1. Devotees must strictly avoid non-veg food, onion and garlic as they are considered tamsik.
2. Devotees observing fast must avoid food items made of rice, pulses and wheat.
3. During the puja, one must not offer coconut water to the Shivling.
