The schools and banks in India's richest state will remain inoperable today i.e. Friday (December 6).

India observes Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s death anniversary on December 6. This day is known as Mahaparinirvan Divas. Ambedkar played a key role in writing India’s Constitution and fought against caste discrimination.

Mahaparinirvan means ultimate liberation. Ambedkar’s followers believe he achieved this state. They consider him a virtuous guru.

People honor Ambedkar with memorials, seminars, and discussions. Many gather at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai to pay tribute. This day also reminds people of the continuing challenges of caste discrimination in India.

Born on April 14, 1891, Ambedkar was a jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer. He was Independent India’s first Law Minister. He worked to fight against discrimination against Dalits and envisioned an equal society.

Ambedkar died on December 6, 1956, after converting to Buddhism. Millions attended his cremation at Dadar Chowpatty Beach, which is now known as Chaitya Bhoomi.

In 1990, Ambedkar received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. His work continues to influence social justice movements in India.
