Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is getting a Hollywood remake. Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirms talks, while Matthew McConaughey is reportedly being considered.

Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil crime thriller Maharaja is heading for a Hollywood adaptation, with an A-list actor reportedly being considered for the lead role. The 2024 film, directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, has attracted international attention following its strong reception in China. Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed that the makers were approached by a Hollywood agency seeking the remake rights, a TOI report stated.

Hollywood agency approaches ‘Maharaja’ makers

Speaking about the project, Sundaram said the film’s performance in China, both in theatres and on OTT, helped generate interest from Hollywood. According to Sacnilk, Maharaja earned around ₹91.65 crore at the Chinese box office. The film also found an audience on streaming platforms, adding to its international visibility.

Sundaram said the Hollywood agency is currently working on setting up the remake and is looking to attach an A-list actor to the project. The remake could reportedly begin production next year. The producer, however, did not confirm the studio or the actor who could headline the English-language version.

Is Matthew McConaughey playing the lead?

Social media speculation has linked Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey to the remake. However, there is no official confirmation that the Oscar-winning actor has signed the project. Sundaram indicated that McConaughey could be among the actors being approached, but stressed that the Hollywood agency handling the remake would be the one to confirm the casting. That leaves the lead role open for now. The production studio and other cast details are also expected to be announced later.

What is ‘Maharaja’ about?

Maharaja follows a barber played by Vijay Sethupathi who walks into a police station to report a missing dustbin. What initially appears to be a strange and relatively simple complaint gradually develops into a much darker crime story. The film was widely noted for its non-linear storytelling, twists and the way seemingly unrelated events eventually connect. Anurag Kashyap also appears in a key negative role.

Sanchana Namidass, who played Sethupathi’s daughter, was another major name to emerge from the film. Her performance earned her the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. With its international release and reception in China now attracting Hollywood interest, Maharaja is set to get a second life in a very different film industry.
