Madhuri Dixit’s sons didn’t know their mother was a Bollywood icon: How photographers outside a cinema left them confused & made them ask, 'Mom, what’s happening?'

For years, Madhuri Dixit’s sons knew her simply as their mother. Growing up in the US, they were largely removed from the frenzy surrounding her Bollywood career and did not fully understand why people recognised her.

That changed after a family outing to a cinema turned into an unexpected lesson about their mother’s celebrity status.

Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, on his podcast, Madhuri recalled the moment her sons first began to understand that “Mom” was also one of Bollywood’s biggest stars.

How Madhuri Dixit’s sons discovered their mother was famous

Madhuri explained that introducing children to a parent’s filmography is not necessarily something that happens deliberately at home.

When asked which film she first showed her children, she said, “You know, it doesn't happen like that. In our homes, you don't just say, ‘Come, children, let's watch this film.’ That's not life.”

Her sons were still very young when they first encountered the reality of her fame.

Madhuri recalled taking them to watch a film at PVR. When the family walked out of the cinema, they were suddenly surrounded by photographers.

“There were so many photographers. They got confused. Everyone was clicking pictures, and they were like, ‘What is happening?’” she recalled.

The children were still puzzled when they returned home.

“When we got home, they asked, ‘Mom, what's happening?’” Madhuri said.

She then had to explain why so many photographers had wanted their pictures.

“So I told them, ‘This is what happens. I am an actress, and that's why they wanted pictures with all of us together.’”

Her sons were only six and eight at the time. As Madhuri put it, “They had no idea.”

Madhuri Dixit’s children thought she was simply their mom

The fact that the family had been living in the US meant her children were not surrounded by the same level of Bollywood celebrity culture.

“Since we were living there (in the U.S.), they were not really influenced by all this,” Madhuri explained.

Their classmates eventually became an unexpected source of information.

“Slowly, they started realizing who I was because children at school would come and say, ‘You are so lucky.’”

When her sons asked why they were considered lucky, their classmates would tell them, “Because your mother is Madhuri Dixit. You are very lucky.”

But the idea was difficult for the children to understand.

“They would say, ‘But Mom, you are a mom.’”

Madhuri would respond, “Yes, I am your mom.”

When they asked why that made them lucky, she realised that her sons were slowly discovering a completely different side of her identity.

“So, these kinds of incidents happened,” she said.

When did Madhuri Dixit’s sons start watching her films?

Her children eventually became more familiar with their mother’s movies, but Madhuri said she did not spend their childhood making them watch her entire filmography.

Instead, their Indian friends played a major role.

“I think they have seen more of my films after they went to college, because of their friends,” she said.

“Their Indian friends have made them watch more of my movies. I think they have seen more movies because of their friends than they had seen in their entire life.”

Ranveer joked that if he were Madhuri Dixit, he would make his children watch all his films.

“But I am not Madhuri Dixit,” he said.

Madhuri laughed before turning the joke around.

“If you were Madhuri Dixit and had kids, you wouldn't do that? That's what happens. You don't do that in homes.”

Madhuri Dixit’s son watched Dil To Pagal Hai years later

One of Madhuri’s films eventually caught the attention of her son: Dil To Pagal Hai.

Madhuri revealed that her older son watched the 1997 romantic musical recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“He said, ‘Mom, how come you never showed us this movie?’”

She then asked him whether he had ever been interested in watching her films.

As children, however, their interests were very different.

“Earlier, they used to watch cartoons and superhero movies, right?” Madhuri said.

Language was another factor. Although her sons understood Hindi, they had grown up outside India and were not fluent in the language.

“After they moved here in Mumbai, only now they have started speaking Marathi and Hindi and all that,” she said.

Madhuri’s story shows why children may see parents differently

Madhuri’s experience also highlights how differently children can perceive their parents from the outside world.

To millions of fans, she is an iconic Bollywood actor whose performances have become part of Indian popular culture. To her sons, however, she was first and foremost “Mom”.

They did not need to know about her stardom to feel connected to her. Her movies, awards and public recognition became something they discovered gradually, often through friends rather than through formal introductions at home.

The story also offers a broader lesson for parents. Children do not necessarily need to inherit their parents’ achievements or public identity. Allowing them to discover those accomplishments naturally can give them the freedom to develop their own interests and sense of self.

If children ask why people recognise their parents, a simple explanation may be enough. If they are not interested, there is no need to turn it into a lesson about success.

For Madhuri’s sons, discovering their mother’s superstar status took years. But they never needed an introduction to the person behind the fame — she was simply their mom.
