LPG shortage: The government is closely monitoring LPG supplies amid prevailing geopolitical tensions
Amid the ongoing West Asia conflict involving Iran, Israel and the US, fuel and LPG prices have remained a key concern for households and transport users across India. On March 26, 2026, there has been no change in domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices across major Indian cities.

The government has maintained that there is no shortage of LPG, petrol or diesel in the country and urged people not to panic amid reports of increased demand in some areas.

The Centre hiked the cost of both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders amid supply disruptions. The price of a 14.2 kg domestic cooking gas cylinder rose by ₹60, while the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder increased by ₹144 in early March across major cities. No changes have been made thereafter.

The government is closely monitoring LPG supplies amid prevailing geopolitical tensions. This is because India meets more than 40 per cent of its crude imports and 90 per cent of its LPG imports from West Asian countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

No LPG shortage, says government

The Centre has said there was no shortage of LPG in the country, and that it was prioritising Piped Natural Gas, adding that it had adequate diesel and petrol supply. “Domestic PNG connections are a top priority for the Government of India, and 100% of them are being supplied. Similarly, CNG used for transportation is also being made available to 100% of consumers,” Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery), Ministry of petroleum & Natural Gas, said.

Assuring people of the supply of LPG, the government said, “Regarding LPG, there is no shortage at any distributorship. Online booking is good. Approximately 26 states have allocated 22,000 tons of commercial LPG so far, and this allocation is nationwide.”

LPG supply to be cut?

The Centre has intensified efforts to expand gas networks and reduce reliance on a single fuel source, introducing a new policy that will stop LPG supply to households that do not switch to piped natural gas (PNG) in areas where the infrastructure is already in place. The move comes amid disruptions in global oil supplies due to the ongoing Middle East crisis.

As the situation persists, authorities are actively promoting PNG as a reliable alternative for both domestic and commercial users, emphasising its uninterrupted pipeline-based supply that eliminates the need for frequent cylinder refills. The directive has been issued under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026, notified by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
