Amid panic buying in parts of India, the Centre on Wednesday urged consumers not to rush to book LPG cylinders despite concerns over supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict. Here are the rates of 14.2 LPG gas cylinders in major Indian cities:

Liquefied petroleum gas is used by over 33 crore households, including lakhs of eateries, and it has suddenly become hard to get. India consumes nearly 191 million standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) of natural gas, with around half of the demand met through imports. However, disruptions to tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz have severely impacted supplies, leading to a loss of nearly 60 mmscmd of gas coming from the Middle East.

The government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act (Esma) to safeguard cooking gas supplies amid reports of LPG shortages, but the anxiety and fear has driven a surge in demand for electrical alternatives. Amid concerns over a possible LPG shortage, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has instructed catering units at railway stations in its western zone to switch to alternative cooking methods such as microwave ovens and induction plates.

In a communication issued on Tuesday, IRCTC directed operators of food plazas, refreshment rooms and ‘Jan Ahaars’ to adopt backup arrangements to ensure uninterrupted catering services for railway passengers.

“You must switch over to alternate cooking modes viz. microwaves and induction, to offset any potential shortage in LPG supplies,” the advisory said. The corporation has also asked catering units to maintain adequate stocks of ready-to-eat food items, along with regular packaged and freshly cooked meals, so that passenger demand can be met smoothly even if LPG supplies are disrupted.
