Why has the LPG price been hiked in India?
India relies heavily on imports to meet its cooking gas needs, with nearly 60% of its total LPG demand sourced from overseas. Of these imports, around 80–90% traditionally come from Middle East suppliers such as Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The biggest concern right now is logistics. A majority of Gulf-origin LPG shipments pass through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, which is currently facing severe disruption amid regional tensions. With rising war-risk insurance premiums, shipping diversions and uncertainty over maritime routes, LPG cargo movement has tightened, while transit times from alternative suppliers are also increasing. This could potentially put pressure on India’s cooking gas supply chain and prices in the coming weeks.
