The London Marathon was back in its usual April spot and some of the world’s most elite long-distance athletes competed across the capital city’s streets on Sunday.

On her first attempt at the distance, Sifan Hassan claimed a surprise victory in the women's race, while Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya won the men's race in the second-quickest marathon ever recorded.
Moreover, it was Emile Cairess from Yorkshire, not Sir Mo Farah, who was the top-performing British male, who finished an impressive sixth in his first-ever marathon. In the meantime, Philip Sesemann, another British participant, sprinted ahead of Farah in the last stretch to finish eighth. Farah, who participated in his last marathon, came in ninth place.
What’s the prize money for the winners?
The sum of money that can be earned in this year's London Marathon has not been made public. However, in the previous year's event, the total reported prize fund was $313,000 (£252,390), with the top 10 finishers receiving cash prizes, while the men's and women's winners each received $55,000 (£44,350). The wheelchair race prize money increased last year, with Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner earning $35,000 (£28,218) each as race champions, and a total of $199,500 (£160,843) being distributed.
