The death of 26-year-old Ketan Agarwal at Lohagad Fort near Lonavala in Maharashtra was first considered an accidental fall. However, the incident has now drawn widespread attention to the historic site Lohagad Fort, highlighting its long-standing reputation as one of the state’s most mysterious locations.

Location and Historical Significance

Situated near Lonavala in Pune district, about 50 kilometres from Pune city, Lohagad Fort is a well-known trekking destination with a history that stretches back nearly 2,000 years.

The name “Lohagad” is derived from Marathi, where “Loha” means iron and “gad” means fort. Together, it translates to “Iron Fort,” reflecting both its strength and the strategic advantage offered by its location.

Role in Maratha History

The fort rose to prominence during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji. In the 17th century, it was captured and fortified by the Marathas, becoming a key element.

Over time, Lohagad Fort has gained a reputation for unexplained occurrences, often shared by trekkers and visitors. Some have reported seeing shadowy figures moving along the fort walls during the early morning hours.

A Popular Trekking Destination Today

Today, Lohagad is widely recognised as a favourite trekking spot. During the monsoon season, the surrounding landscape comes alive with lush greenery, mist-covered hills, and flowing streams, making the climb especially appealing.

The trek is considered accessible for beginners while still offering a rewarding experience, which keeps visitors returning.

Cultural Importance and Accessibility

Apart from tourism, the fort continues to hold cultural and historical importance. Located in the Mawal region of Maharashtra, it lies around 11 km from Lonavala and about 60 km from Pune.

The most convenient way to reach Lohagad Fort is via Malavli Railway Station. From there, visitors can take a shared auto-rickshaw or a local SUV to the base village, Lohagadwadi. Alternatively, travellers can drive directly to the village to begin their trek to the fort.
