In a shocking turn of events, a 42-year-old Lieutenant Colonel posted in Dehradun has been arrested by the city police for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 25-year-old woman from Siliguri. The accused, identified as Lt Col Ramendu Upadhyay, is facing grave charges of smashing the victim's head with a hammer and leaving her lifeless body next to a road in Dehradun. This incident has sent shockwaves through the city.

According to a TOI report, Lt Col Upadhyay initially met the young woman while stationed in West Bengal, where she was employed at a dance bar. Their relationship deepened, and they lived together as a couple in Siliguri. Even after his posting in Dehradun in July, Upadhyay continued the relationship, which eventually led to a series of unfortunate events, TOI quoted SSP (Dehradun) Daleep Singh Kunwar as saying.

The situation escalated when the woman started pressuring Upadhyay to marry her. Matters took a critical turn when Upadhyay's wife confronted the woman, resulting in a heated argument. As tensions mounted, Upadhyay reportedly decided to end the relationship in a horrifying manner.

Following a purported quarrel, Upadhyay took the woman out for a night at a city bar on Saturday. "As per the plan, he took her for a night out to a city bar on Saturday. They later went for a long drive around Dehradun and passed by Thano forest where he smashed her head with a hammer. He then dumped her body next to the road," the SSP said.

After the alleged murder, Upadhyay left the scene, parked his vehicle, and returned home. However, the discovery of the woman's body the following day by local residents prompted a swift police investigation. The investigation quickly homed in on Upadhyay as the prime suspect, thanks to CCTV footage from the area.

On Monday, the police took Lt Col Upadhyay into custody for questioning, during which he purportedly confessed to the crime. Consequently, he now faces charges of murder, and legal proceedings will determine his guilt or innocence.
