Leopard takes a stroll on streets of Nainital. See viral video

Saket Badola, an officer of the Indian Forest Service (IFS), shared a video of a leopard walking down the streets of Nainital, Uttarakhand. The clip was posted on Twitter with a caption that reads: ‘Post-dinner walk, in the city of #Nainital.” In the video, the leopard looks at the camera once and walks towards the gate of the Thakur Dev Singh Bisht College campus.



The Nainital Leopard’s video gained attention on social media as the video received over 66,000 views and 570 likes. IFS officer Susanta Nanda commented: ‘Majestic. Seems to be having a beautiful time. But my thoughts are with the morning walkers of this serene campus.’ His comment hints at a possible human-animal conflict in the future as the big cat seems to have had no problem entering the human settlements.


Netizens have a mixed reaction. One Twitter user proudly commented: ‘Since it’s Nainital in Uttarakhand, we can proudly say that we are the No 1 state in Wildlife Conservation.” However, another user jokingly asked Saket how he is sure it is a ‘post-dinner’ walk when the leopard could be ‘still searching for Dinner’.


A user expressed their delight and shared their experience of the time when they were pursuing PG in Forestry from the campus where this video was filmed. Appreciating the campus’s rich biodiversity, they informed others that the place has other animals, such as deer, porcupines and several different species of birds.

Several incidents of leopards entering residential areas have been reported before. Environmentalists argue that the reason behind this is an increase in encroachments on the animals’ habitats that should be checked by government officials.
