Kunal Bahl Flags Rs 5,900 Hotel Laundry Bill
Kunal Bahl, co-founder of Snapdeal, has sparked debate online after sharing a hotel laundry bill of Rs 5,900 for just seven basic garments during a recent work trip.

The Delhi-based entrepreneur described the pricing as an example of hotels being “out of touch” with changing consumer expectations, especially in an era where convenience-driven services are rapidly evolving.

Rs 5,900 for Seven Garments During Work Travel

Taking to X, Bahl posted an image of the bill and wrote, “Part 2 of hotels being out of touch with changing services landscape for consumers. Laundry of 7 pieces of basic garments during work travel = Rs 5900 + taxes.”

The cost worked out to more than Rs 800 per garment, excluding taxes. Bahl further noted that some of the clothes themselves cost less than what he was charged to have them laundered. He did not name the hotel in his post.

Call for ‘Quick Commerce’ Laundry Start-ups

Drawing parallels with the rise of quick commerce grocery services, Bahl questioned whether entrepreneurs were exploring similar rapid-delivery laundry models.

“Some of the garments cost less than the laundry. Founders: anyone building quick commerce for laundry?” he asked, inviting start-up founders to consider the opportunity.

His remarks come after he previously commented that many hotel guests now prefer ordering food via platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato instead of dining in-house, another shift he suggested the hospitality sector should reflect upon.

Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users

The post drew varied reactions online. Some users responded with humour, joking that the garments may have been “hand-washed in an exclusive artisanal manner”. Others criticised the pricing strategy, suggesting that such high charges discourage guests from using hotel laundry services altogether.

However, not everyone agreed that a quick commerce laundry model would succeed in India. One user argued that if high-frequency services like food delivery struggle with profitability, a niche offering such as express laundry may face even greater challenges.

Growing Scrutiny of Hotel Service Pricing

Bahl’s comments have reignited conversations around hotel service charges, particularly add-ons such as laundry and in-room dining.

As consumer behaviour continues to shift towards cost transparency and app-based convenience, industry observers say hospitality businesses may need to reassess traditional pricing models.
