Laal Singh Chaddha: Atul Kulkarni talks about Aamir Khan's acting, Shah Rukh Khan's cameo

Laal Singh Chaddha got its theatrical release on August 11. Starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor, the movie is a Bollywood adaptation of the critically acclaimed Academy award-winning Forrest Gump. Atul Kulkarni adapted the Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump for Indian audiences after Aamir Khan named it his favourite movie.

Directed by Advait Chandan, the movie was made on a massive budget of Rs 180 crore; however, the movie could make back only 60 crores making it a box office failure. It however became quite popular on OTT platform Netflix.


In a recent interview, Atul Kulkarni shared how he felt about Aamir's performance and how they decided to incorporate the Shah Rukh cameo in the movie. Talking about Laal teaching SRK his iconic romantic pose, Atul disclosed that they made an excel sheet because they were doubtful whether the timeline would match up or not, and after calculating what could be Laal's age at that particular time when he met SRK, the director communicated that they were lucky as everything had fallen into place.

Many audiences found parallels between Aamir's distinct acting in PK and Laal Singh Chaddha. Atul added the acting style was Aamir's and Advait's decision, and he hardly ever went on the sets. He said that even Aamir would agree that this portrayal was not the only way he could have played the character, and that he understands pretty well how people reacted the way they did. He refused to comment when enquired about his feelings for the box office numbers.
