Kolkata is likely to experience rainfall with thunderstorms today with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 30 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively. Light to moderate rain is also likely in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri on Monday and Tuesday.
Light rain in Kolkata
Kolkata and its adjoining districts last experienced rainfall in November and a few western districts like Purulia got some drizzle in early December, an IMD official told PTI today. “A depression-like system will likely trigger light to moderate rain across several districts. The weather office has confirmed that downpours are currently off the radar. Residents in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri should also keep their umbrellas handy. A separate Western Disturbance is expected to bring scattered showers to these hilly areas and the foothills,” an IMD official told the Indian Express.“Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely to affect southern districts, including East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, South 24 Parganas, and Bankura, while light rain is expected in the northern hilly regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri. By Tuesday, this rain activity is forecast to extend to Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly,” said the officer.

A yellow warning has been issued for these early-week thunderstorms, specifically noting a potential impact on potato harvesting and a risk of lightning strikes in open areas.

On Monday, February 23, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 20.6 degrees Celsius. The maximum is likely to hover around 29 degrees. From Wednesday, February 25, to Sunday, March 1, dry weather is likely to prevail over the city. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius through the week, while maximum temperatures may gradually rise from 29 degrees to around 31 degrees by the weekend. The Met office has indicated no large change in night temperatures across the districts of West Bengal in the next seven days.
