Kolkata weather today: IMD issues yellow alert for 'City of Joy' and warns of rain, thundersquall and strong winds

Kolkata is likely to experience spells of rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds today, April 9, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest weather bulletin. An yellow alert has been issued for the city on Thursday with the weather office warning of thundersquall with wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph. IMD has also forecasted thunderstorm with rain accompanied with lightning and gusty winds. The weather conditions are expected to improve from Friday, the IMD said, adding the 'City of Joy' might experience partly cloudy sky with possibility of the development of thunder and lightning.

According to a special Met department bulletin, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over Odisha and adjoining regions. A trough extends from Gangetic West Bengal to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu. Combined with strong moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal, these conditions are likely to trigger enhanced thunderstorm activity across parts of West Bengal.

Meteorologists say the prevailing pattern will continue at least till Thursday, bringing one or two spells of nor’westers over Kolkata and nearby districts. An approaching western disturbance is also expected to further boost Kolkata rain intensity. “We expect higher rainfall along with gusty winds from Wednesday,” HR Biswas of the Kolkata Met office told TOI.

The city is likely to receive another spell of Kolkata rain on Thursday before a brief dry phase sets in. Earlier, 6 mm of rainfall on Monday night brought relief, pushing Tuesday’s minimum temperature down to 20.2°C, while the maximum settled at 32°C.
