Kolkata Weather Today July 10
Kolkata woke up to grey skies and steady rainfall on Friday, as the monsoon tightened its grip over South Bengal. Streets in several low-lying pockets have already started waterlogging, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says this is only the beginning — the rain is expected to intensify as the day progresses, with the wet spell likely to run through the weekend and into early next week.

Kolkata Rain Today: Why It's Raining So Hard

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, a monsoon trough is currently running across the Gangetic plains, while a cyclonic circulation sits over the Bay of Bengal, continuously pulling in moisture toward the coast. This combination, active monsoon axis plus a low-pressure pocket, is exactly the recipe that produces the kind of relentless, multi-day rain South Bengal is now witnessing.

Friday morning readings in Kolkata showed the mercury hovering around 28°C, but with humidity levels near 94%, the "feels-like" temperature has climbed closer to 34°C, making the air heavy and sticky between spells of rain. Cloud cover is near total, and visibility has dropped in several areas.

South Bengal: Where to Expect Heavy Rain

The IMD's warning list for South Bengal is a long one. Districts flagged for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days include:

  • Kolkata and South 24 Parganas
  • East Midnapore
  • Howrah and Hooghly (expected to see the heaviest spells on Friday itself)
  • Nadia and Murshidabad
  • Birbhum
  • East and West Burdwan (Bardhaman)
Weather officials say the situation could remain tense in these districts for the next four days, with rainfall shifting from one district to another as the trough moves. Nadia and Murshidabad are likely to bear the brunt on Saturday, while Hooghly, East Burdwan and Nadia could see another heavy spell on Sunday. Forecasters expect the intensity to ease only slightly from Tuesday, though light-to-moderate rain is likely to continue even after that.

Alongside the rain, thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40–50 km/h are expected in several pockets, so residents are being advised to stay indoors during lightning activity and avoid sheltering under trees or loose structures.

North Bengal Also on Alert

It isn't just the southern districts that are under watch. The hill and foothill districts of North Bengal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, are staring at heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the IMD keeping these areas on high alert through the coming days. Malda and the two Dinajpur districts are likely to see comparatively lighter, though still persistent, rain.

Rough Seas: Fishermen Told to Stay Ashore

With wind speeds over open water expected to touch 55 km/h at times, a fishing advisory is currently in force along the coasts of West Bengal and North Odisha. Port authorities at Kolkata and Haldia have hoisted local cautionary signals, and fishermen have been directed not to venture into the sea for the next couple of days as a safety precaution.

Weather Kolkata: What Residents Should Keep in Mind

  • Keep an eye on local waterlogging updates before stepping out, especially in South Kolkata and low-lying parts of Howrah and Hooghly.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy spells and thunderstorm warnings.
  • Keep phones charged and important documents in waterproof covers if you live in flood-prone pockets.
  • Farmers in the affected belt should take precautions to protect standing crops wherever possible.

For now, the message from the weather office is simple: this isn't a one-day event. With the monsoon axis and the cyclonic circulation both expected to stay active over the region, South Bengal should brace for a wet, disruptive stretch through the weekend, with only a gradual let-up expected from the middle of next week. North Bengal's hill districts, meanwhile, will need to stay watchful for landslide and flash-flood risk given the volume of rain forecast.
