Durga Puja 2025 Dashami weather warning: IMD forecasts heavy rain across Kolkata and South Bengal

Kolkata Weather Alert: The festive spirit in Kolkata may face a wet challenge today, Thursday, 2 October 2025, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and surrounding districts. The rain is likely to disrupt Dashami celebrations and idol immersion processions along the Hooghly river.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Kolkata and South Bengal

According to the IMD, rainfall in south Bengal could range from 64.5 mm (heavy) to over 115 mm (very heavy) today. This is expected to aggravate waterlogging in low-lying areas and cause traffic disruptions across the city.


“Light to moderate rain is very likely at most places, with heavy to very heavy rain (7–20 cm) at one or two locations,” the IMD bulletin stated, highlighting districts such as South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, and Hooghly.

Kolkata, along with Jhargram, Howrah, Nadia, and East Burdwan, is expected to receive heavy rainfall between 7–11 cm. Coastal areas, including East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas, may also experience gusty winds up to 50 kmph and lightning, while multiple south Bengal districts could witness thunderstorms throughout the day.

North Bengal to See Heavy to Very Heavy Rain

In north Bengal, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, South Dinajpur, and North Dinajpur on 2 October. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone areas.

Public Advisory Issued

The IMD has warned of waterlogging in low-lying zones, traffic snarls, and disruptions in underpasses and key city roads between 2 and 4 October. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain hours and remain updated on local advisories.

Cyclonic Circulation in the Bay of Bengal

The heavy rain is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the East Central Bay of Bengal, which has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the West Central Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to move northwestwards, intensify into a depression and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast around 3 October.

Durga Puja Immersions May Face Disruptions

The forecast comes as a concern for civic authorities in Kolkata, as idol immersions on the Hooghly river banks are scheduled for today. Steps are being taken to ensure public safety, as heavy rain may raise river water levels, making immersions riskier. Authorities have urged organisers and devotees to exercise caution during the processions.

Rain Likely to Extend Beyond Durga Puja

The IMD also indicated that rainfall may continue beyond Durga Puja in districts such as Murshidabad, Birbhum, East Burdwan, Nadia, Bankura, Purulia, and Hooghly, potentially affecting post-festival activities.
