Kerala Weather: IMD issues fresh monsoon update; check expected arrival date in Kerala

The southwest monsoon, initially expected to reach Kerala on May 26, is now likely to arrive a few days later, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Despite the delay, the state is gearing up for intense rainfall, with the weather department placing all districts under a ‘yellow alert’ until May 28.

In its weekly update released on May 21, the IMD noted that the monsoon is now expected to make its onset over Kerala between May 28 and June 3.

Conditions Favour Further Advancement

The weather department also stated on Sunday that conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the remaining regions of the Andaman Sea over the next two to three days.

Heavy Rainfall Already Impacting Kerala

Although the official declaration of the monsoon onset is still pending, several parts of Kerala have already been witnessing heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

Yellow Alerts Issued in Multiple Districts

The IMD has issued yellow alerts for districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam. Among these, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha are expected to remain under alert on Wednesday as well.

The southwest monsoon plays a crucial role in India’s climate and economy, as the country receives over 70 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September. This season is vital for agriculture, reservoir levels, and overall water availability across the nation.
