A Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker operated by the United States military transmitted a 7700 distress signal while flying over the Persian Gulf near Iran, indicating an in flight emergency, according to flight tracking data and regional media reports. There has been no official confirmation from US authorities regarding any crash, loss, or specific emergency involving the aircraft. If confirmed, it would mark the second reported loss of a KC-135 in the region since the start of Operation Fury.

The United States Central Command and the Pentagon have not issued any statement confirming an incident involving the aircraft over Qatar or the Strait of Hormuz. Reports note that distress signals and temporary radar loss are not uncommon in the region due to GPS and electronic interference amid heightened tensions, and do not necessarily indicate a crash.

Flight path and last known activity

The aircraft had departed from Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates before its signal was lost over Qatar. Flight tracking data indicates that it flew in a circular pattern for some time before beginning its descent for landing. The cause of the emergency remains unclear, and there is no official indication of hostile action.

Regional reports and response

Iran’s semi official Fars news agency reported on the aircraft’s disappearance based on flight tracking data. However, there has been no statement from Iranian authorities suggesting involvement in the incident.

Similar incident occured in March

A similar situation occurred in March when an aircraft was reportedly lost in western Iraq following an attack claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran backed groups. The group had stated that the action was taken to defend national sovereignty and airspace.

What is a KC-135 Stratotanker

The KC-135 Stratotanker is a military aircraft designed primarily for aerial refueling and has been a key component of United States Air Force operations for more than six decades. It extends the operational range and endurance of various aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, and also supports the Navy, Marine Corps, and allied forces.

What can the KC-135 tanker do

In addition to refueling, the aircraft can transport passengers and cargo and is equipped for aeromedical evacuation missions using specialised medical support systems. It is powered by four turbofan engines and can carry significant fuel and cargo loads, enabling long range operations.

Operational background

Derived from Boeing’s 367-80 design, which also led to the development of the Boeing 707 passenger aircraft, the KC-135 has undergone multiple upgrades over the years to enhance performance and efficiency. Several variants remain in service across different branches of the US military, continuing to support global operations.
