Karwa Chauth 2024
Karwa Chauth is one of the most popular festivals among married women across the country, especially in North India. The festival is celebrated northern states including Uttrakhand, Himanchal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chattisgarh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Karwa Chauth is celebrated the fourth day after the full moon of the Kartik month. This year karwa Chauth will fall on 20th October.



On this day, married women fast and pray for the health, well-being and long life of their husbands. Women do not eat or drink anything from sunrise to moonrise. They break their fast by drinking water after seeing the moon at night. The festival is celebrated in different ways in different regions.

Karwa Chauth 2024 date and time

According to the Purnimanta calendar, Karwa Chauth falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik. This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 20, Sunday, as per Drik Panchang. The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 6:46 am on October 20, and concludes at 4:16 am on October 21.

Karwa Chauth shubh muhurat, moonrise timing

Karwa Chauth puja muhurat is from 5:46 pm to 7:02 pm for a duration of 1 hour and 16 minutes. The moonrise on Karwa Chauth is expected to be at 7:54 pm, but will be different in different regions.


Vrat vidhi

The Karwa Chauth day typically starts with women observing fast eating a sargi as a pre-dawn meal. This is given to them by their mother-in-law. It has karwa (earthen pot used in pooja), sweets, fruits, dry fruits and feni. It also includes gifts like saree and jewellery.

Women wake up, take bath and eat their sargi, all before sunrise. After the sunrise, they do not even drink water.

In the evening, women gather up and listen to Karwa Chauth Katha and perform the pooja. Women break their fast after seeing the moon through the Karwa Chauth sieve (channi).

Pooja samagri

To perform the pooja you will need a plate, mitti/gobar to make Gora and Parvati idol, Kawa Chauth storybook, sindoor, red thread, karwa, fruits, sweets, dhoop, match-box, tika, paan-leaves, ghee, kapoor, diya, channi and any cloth to cover the thali.


Karwa Chauth katha

Women listen to the katha in the evening. Married women of the society gather at one place for the katha. You can easily get a Karwa Chauth book from the market and read it.


Karwa Chauth pooja vidhi

Apart from fasting, women also worship Goddess Parvati on this day. The goddess is considered to be Akhand Saubhagyavati (whose husband has a long life) and thus she is worshipped on this day.

Sindoor, fruits and flowers are offered to the goddess and diyas (lamps) are lit. After this, the katha is performed and the women wait for the moonrise to break their fast.

Women first see the moon through a sieve and then their husbands. The husband breaks their wife's fast by feeding them water and something sweet.
