A tragic wave of deaths at the Kittur Rani Chennamma Zoo in Belagavi has sent shockwaves across Karnataka’s wildlife community. In just four days, 31 blackbucks have died, plunging the zoo’s population from 38 to a mere seven. According to zoo officials, the deaths occurred in quick succession, eight on Thursday, 20 on Saturday, and three more on Sunday and Monday.

The alarming scale of the fatalities has prompted the Karnataka Forest Department to swing into action, with immediate containment and investigation measures now underway.

Why Did So Many Blackbucks Die?

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre visited Belagavi on Monday to take stock of the situation. Speaking to reporters, he said he felt “deep pain” over the loss of the animals.

According to the Minister, a bacterial infection is the prima facie cause of the deaths. He confirmed that veterinary teams and zoo authorities have already begun administering treatment to the surviving blackbucks while trying to isolate the source of the infection.

Khandre stressed that the situation resembles the unpredictability seen during COVID-19, saying: “No one can predict such occurrences.”

How Is the Karnataka Government Responding?

In response to the crisis, Eshwar Khandre has ordered a high-level probe to find out how the disease spread so rapidly. Specialist teams from Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru have been sent to assist the zoo, and officials are now coordinating with external wildlife health experts.

All zoos across Karnataka have also been alerted, with instructions to increase surveillance and initiate early-warning checks to prevent any potential spread of the bacterial infection.

What Happens to the Remaining Blackbucks?

With only seven blackbucks left, the priority is now to protect the surviving animals. The Minister said he has issued strict directions to ensure no further deaths occur. Intensive care, isolation, and constant monitoring are being carried out by veterinary professionals.

Environmental health assessments, enclosure sanitisation, and food-quality checks have also been stepped up as part of the containment strategy.

Why This Outbreak Raises Bigger Questions About Zoo Health and Wildlife Safety in India

The sudden blackbuck deaths have sparked wider concern about zoo management practices, disease surveillance, and the ability of facilities to respond to unexpected outbreaks. As investigations continue, experts say the incident highlights the need for:

  • Stronger biosecurity measures
  • Regular health screenings for captive wildlife
  • Faster escalation protocols during disease outbreaks
  • Better training for zoo staff in early detection of symptoms
The tragedy has also brought attention to the delicate nature of antelope species like the blackbuck, which are highly vulnerable to infections spreading through close enclosures.
