Karnataka Rajyotsava 2026: Why it is celebrated on November 1, history, wishes and WhatsApp status messages to share with loved ones

Karnataka Rajyotsava is being celebrated on November 1, marking the formation of the state through the merger of Kannada-speaking regions in 1956. The annual occasion brings together people across Karnataka to honour the Kannada language, regional heritage, cultural traditions and the history of the state's unification.

The day is widely observed with the display of the Karnataka flag, cultural programmes, public events, music, dance and celebrations centred on Kannada identity. From schools and colleges to government offices and community organisations, people take part in activities that recognise the state's linguistic and cultural legacy.

The celebrations also offer an opportunity to reflect on Karnataka's journey, from its historical roots and literary contributions to its growth as a centre for education, technology, business and innovation. The occasion is popularly known as Kannada Rajyotsava and is marked by a strong sense of regional pride among Kannadigas.

Karnataka Rajyotsava: Why is November 1 celebrated?

The origins of Karnataka Rajyotsava are linked to the demand for uniting Kannada-speaking populations that were divided among several administrative territories during British rule and the period before the reorganisation of states.

Kannada-speaking communities lived across regions governed by the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, Madras Presidency and Hyderabad State, as well as the princely state of Mysore. The movement for unification gathered momentum as people sought a common administrative identity based on their shared language and cultural connections.

A major change came on November 1, 1956, when the States Reorganisation Act took effect. Kannada-speaking areas from neighbouring states and administrative units were merged with the erstwhile Mysore State, creating a larger state.

The state continued to be known as Mysore for several years. On November 1, 1973, its name was officially changed to Karnataka, giving the unified Kannada-speaking region the identity it carries today. The date continues to be observed annually as Karnataka Rajyotsava.
