Dr. Ishwar Hasabi, Medical Superintendent of KMC RI, told TOI that the procedure took place on September 23 after an MRI scan revealed an inner foetus with a spinal vertebra.
"The mother is from Kundagol taluk, and she attended all regular check-ups at our hospital. It was a normal and mature delivery. Both the baby and mother are doing well. The baby's father is one of fraternal twins. This is the second delivery for the couple," Hasabi told TOI.
No history of any health problems was seen in the family. Hence, we feel it's the rarest of the rare, and there is a need for further study. We will conduct some more tests with the cooperation of the parents, and surgery on the foetus can be taken up in due course," he added.
He also stated that the inner foetus is not fully developed. "There is a need for more tests. We will share this case reporting of Foetus in Foetu (FIF) and documentation for medical journals so that deep research can continue in the world of medical science," he asserted.
Doctors at KMC RI stated that it's an uncommon growth of some substance in the body of the infant. "Rudimentary structures such as the spine and the skull bones of a parasitic twin are developing within the newborn's abdomen," they added.
