Why your part number or serial number may have changed
Several voters found their part and serial numbers updated when the draft electoral rolls were published on August 24. The final list follows a verification exercise that began with 5,54,32,314 voters recorded as of June 16.During the first round of deletions, the draft roll recorded 4,46,35,975 voters, down from the initial 5.54 crore. The exercise classified entries under ASDDO, covering voters categorised as absent, shifted, dead, duplicate and others.
The largest category of deletions involved people classified as permanently shifted. This group accounted for 65.45 lakh voters, or 11.8% of the ASDDO list.
What happened during Karnataka's SIR exercise?
The claims, notices and objections phase began on August 24 and continued for two months. Officials issued notices to around 43.8 lakh of the 4.46 crore voters included in the draft roll. Around 60,000 people who received notices were excluded from the final list, according to the report. The deadline for filing claims and objections during this phase was September 23.
Between June 16 and September 23, authorities received 7.87 lakh Form 6 applications seeking inclusion in the final voter list. Another 4,530 applications came from non-resident Indians through Form 6A.
Meanwhile, 58,475 objections to existing entries and requests for deletion were filed by voters or their families. Around 10.99 lakh voters sought changes to their details, including spelling corrections and polling booth changes.
The exercise began on June 20 with 59,050 booth-level officers, 332 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and 224 Electoral Registration Officers. The number of booth-level officers later increased to 60,932.
What should you do if your name is missing from the final list?
If your name does not appear in the downloaded PDF, check the electoral roll using the ECI's online voter search facility before assuming your registration has been removed. You can search using your EPIC number or personal details and verify the relevant district, Assembly constituency and polling part.If you still cannot find your name, contact your Booth Level Officer (BLO) or the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for your constituency to establish the status of your registration.
ECI provides Form 6 for eligible citizens seeking inclusion in the electoral roll. Applications can be submitted online through the voter services portal or offline through the relevant election registration authorities. The electoral authorities verify applications before deciding whether to include a name.
If your name is present but your personal details are incorrect, Form 8 can be used to request corrections or update your address after shifting residence. Applicants can track their application through the ECI portal.
ECI also provides a voter helpline at 1950 for assistance with electoral registration and voter details.
Why checking the final electoral roll matters
Having a voter ID card does not by itself guarantee that a person can vote. ECI says a voter's name must appear in the electoral roll to be eligible to cast a vote. Voters should therefore verify their registration and updated polling details rather than relying only on an older voter ID card or a previously downloaded electoral roll.(Inputs from TOI)
