A prequel to Shetty’s 2022 blockbuster Kantara, the Kannada film was produced by Hombale Films and released in theatres on October 2.

Kantara Chapter 1 (Hindi) is expected to make its digital premiere on November 27 on OTT platforms, according to a report by Filmibeat.

The report claims that Amazon Prime Video has acquired the digital rights to Kantara 2 for a massive sum. Typically, South Indian films start streaming online after a four-week theatrical run — for instance, Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 debuted online on October 31. In contrast, Hindi films generally premiere on OTT after completing an eight-week theatrical window.

If reports are to be believed, Kantara 2 will have its world digital premiere on November 27.

The epic mythological drama has become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, continuing to perform well in theatres despite its OTT availability. The film’s box office collection has reportedly crossed Rs 900 crore.

Speaking to IANS at a success party in Mumbai, Rishab Shetty earlier recalled the writing journey of Kantara: A Legend, saying, “We wrote only 3–4 drafts and completed the script in 3–4 months before going straight into shooting. It was very simple.”

He added that the team approached the project with sincerity rather than market-driven strategies. Detailing the evolution of the prequel, Shetty explained, “When we started, we focused on the story of Shiva’s father. The bound script was ready, but later we realized the first part needed a backstory. So we decided to go further back—to the beginning, not the legend.”

Once the full backstory was developed, the team realized it couldn’t fit into a small segment. “We finished it and understood it was a complete story by itself,” Shetty said. “We had around 15–16 narration drafts.”

A prequel to Shetty’s 2022 blockbuster Kantara, the Kannada film was produced by Hombale Films and released in theatres on October 2.

Set in pre-colonial Karnataka during the reign of the Kadambas of Banavasi, Kantara: Chapter 1 portrays the fierce conflict between the forest-dwelling tribes of Kantara and an oppressive king.

The film stars Rishab Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Gulshan Devaiah, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, P. D. Satish Chandra, and Prakash Thuminad.

Written, directed, and headlined by Rishab Shetty, the film is produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the Hombale Films banner. Arvind S. Kashyap handled the cinematography, while B. Ajaneesh Loknath composed the music—both of whom also worked on the original Kantara.
