According to legend, there once lived a person in a village who was known for his quick temper. One day, he got into a heated argument with a Brahmin. The conflict escalated so severely that the Brahmin lost his life during the altercation. After the incident, the person was filled with deep remorse and fear over committing the grave sin of killing a Brahmin (Brahmahatya). Wanting to seek forgiveness, he tried to attend the Brahmin’s funeral rites. However, the Brahmins present there stopped him from taking part in the rituals. They told him that before doing so, he must first atone for his sins through proper repentance. Distressed and eager for salvation, the person asked the Brahmins to guide him toward a way to cleanse his sins and attain peace. The Brahmins advised him to observe a fast on Kamika Ekadashi, which falls during the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Shravan. They instructed him to worship Lord Vishnu with full devotion and sincerity.
