Kamala Harris recalls Diwali celebrations as a child, her travels to India

Kamala Harris, the first Indian-origin vice president of the US, has attributed her success to her Indian American mother's passion, tenacity, and fortitude

She said that she stood before everyone as Vice President of the United States due to her mother's devotion, tenacity, and courage.

Harris spoke to a gathering of more than 200 distinguished Indian Americans at a White House Diwali celebration sponsored by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.


She also recalled her frequent visits to Chennai as a child and her Diwali celebrations with her grandparents. She, like many others, would travel to India every other year to avoid the rainy season, and they would celebrate Diwali.

She and her sister Maya had great recollections of waking up in the middle of the night and going to the eldest in their family, who was their grandfather.

Harris said her mother came to the United States at the age of 19 to study. Her mother, she said, had arrived by herself with ambition to become a breast cancer researcher. And she's made a life for herself in this nation, getting a Ph.D., excelling in her area of study, and raising Harris and her sister.

Harris urged those gathered to realize the principles of liberty, democracy, and equality.
